Our Commitment to Children and Young People
Police Authorities have a general responsibility under the The Children Act 2004
to work with "children services authorities" (local councils) to safeguard, protect
and promote the well-being of children and young people (0-18 years). The national
programme, Every Child Matters: Change for Children, targets partner activity around five themes. These act as pillars to ensure,
whatever a child's background, they have the support they need to:
- Be healthy
- Stay safe
- Enjoy and achieve
- Make a positive contribution
- Achieve economic wellbeing
Part 2 Section 11 of the Act places a specific duty on Police Authorities in
England to ensure that they (and their agents) discharge their duties having regard
to the need to safeguard and promote welfare of children.
