Securing outstanding policing for local people

The BIG Conversation

Welcome to the BIG Conversation, the Police Authority’s consultation page. Here you will find details of the range of ways in which the Police Authority gathers public opinion to shape local policing.

Citizens Panel

In September 2009 the Police Authority recruited 6,000 local residents to a Citizens Panel. The Panel was recruited from communities across the four Local Authority areas covered by Humberside Police and is demographically representative, meaning that the social, ethnic, age and gender make up of the group is in direct proportion to the overall population of the area.

We have surveyed the group regularly since recruitment and they have provided us with valuable insight and data relating to such topics as local crime levels, confidence in Humberside Police and priorities for budget considerations.

The survey results are used to inform our Members of your views and policing priorities. They are taken into consideration when the Authority negotiates local policing plan priorities with the Chief Constable, and more recently, have provided valuable insight into your thoughts and opinions about how Humberside Police can continue to deliver the service you want in the face of budgets cuts delivered in the 2010 Comprehensive Spending Review.

Focus Group Programme

To compliment the data from the Citizens Panel the Authority hosts monthly focus groups with different parts of the community. These focus groups are tailored around four themes; the general public, Neighbourhood Watch Groups, victims of crime and diverse communities. The focus groups aim to provide further insight and reasoning to the quantitative survey outcomes and also address issues that are difficult to answer in a closed question survey, such as perceptions of crime and safety and trust in the local police.

Neighbourhood Watch Groups

Neighbourhood Watch is a highly credible and respected example of the ‘big society’. Humberside Police Authority and the four local authority partners (East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston Upon Hull, North East Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire) recognise the valuable contribution neighbourhood watch groups make to ensuring communities are, and feel, safer and the Authority is committed to ensuring that we continue to provide support to those groups along with our Local Authority partners. Humberside Police Authority will be utilising Neighbourhood Watch within the focus group programme detailed above, for more information contact Claire Harrison on claire.harrison@humberside.pnn.police.uk or telephone 01482 220793.

If you require information about establishing a Neighbourhood Watch group in your area, please contact your local authority.

Webchats

The BIG Conversation Webchats are scheduled online forums that give members of the public the opportunity to have their say on Humberside Police Authority matters, ongoing local policing concerns that have not been dealt with effectively and other hot topics that affect the Criminal Justice System.
